Call us first, because the wait depends on your prescription and the lenses you pick. See our full line of eyeglasses for more.

Eye exams are a series of vision tests performed by optometrists to evaluate your vision and eye health. These tests are an important part of staying healthy. Here are some of the different eye tests that are part of our eye exam.

Covering one eye at a time, you’ll be asked to read letters from a chart positioned at a specific distance. This is likely what you think of when you picture an eye exam. Your optometrist will analyze your responses to determine how your vision in each eye measures up against the standard 20/20 vision.

This test measures the shape and curve of the outside of the eye, known as the cornea. The shape of the cornea affects how light enters the eye and is focused. Some people have corneas with steep or elongated curves, which can result in a condition known as astigmatism.
Optometrists use keratometry tests to detect astigmatism.

An intraocular pressure test measures the force or pressure created by the fluid in your eyes. An abnormal level of eye pressure can be a warning sign of glaucoma.

When you imagine an eye appointment, do you picture yourself looking into a thick instrument with numerous lenses and dials? That machine is called a phoropter, and your optometrist uses it to conduct a retinoscopy. A retinoscopy allows the optometrist to approximate your optimal lens prescription.

Along with a retinoscopy, a refraction test determines your eyeglass prescription. You gaze into the phoropter and look at the eye chart on the opposite wall. The optometrist repeatedly asks you which of two lens options lets you see more clearly, and determines whether your eyes are nearsighted, farsighted, or affected by astigmatism.

A slit lamp is a microscope with a bright, thin beam of light. You rest your chin and forehead on the frame while the optometrist examines the front structures of your eyes, including the eyelids, cornea, iris and lens. It helps detect dry eye, cataracts, scratches and infections.

When recommended, eye drops widen your pupils so the optometrist can see more of the inside of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve. This allows a more detailed examination for conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Your vision may stay blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours.
The exact tests and their order depend on your eyes and your needs. Dr. Russell will explain each step as you go.
