Before you pick new eyeglasses near The Villages, you need an exam for an accurate prescription. You may have these tests.
Visual acuity test. This is the eye chart test most people picture.
You cover one eye at a time and read letters from a sign set a certain distance away. Your optometrist then compares each eye’s vision to standard 20/20 vision.
Keratometry test. This test measures the shape and curve of the front of the eye, called the cornea. The cornea’s shape affects how your eye bends light.
Some corneas have steep or long curves, which cause a condition called astigmatism. Optometrists use keratometry to detect astigmatism.
Retinoscopy test. Picture the thick instrument with many lenses and dials that sits in front of your face.
That machine is a phoropter, and your optometrist uses it for a retinoscopy. This test lets the optometrist estimate your best lens prescription.
Intraocular pressure measurement. This test measures the force created by the fluid in your eyes. An abnormal level of eye pressure can be a warning sign of glaucoma.
Refraction test. Along with a retinoscopy, a refraction test sets your eyeglass prescription. You look into the phoropter and read the eye chart on the opposite wall.
During the test, you see pairs of lenses. The optometrist asks which of the two lets you see more clearly.
We take time with each patient, from Lady Lake to The Villages and beyond. You get an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan made for you.

Having just moved to The Villages I didn’t know who to go to to have my wife’s and my eyes examined. Upon checking the internet I chose Hindsight based on others recommendations and boy am I glad I did. From the moment we walked in the door until we left we were treated like family.
The staff and Doctor Russell were very professional and I would highly recommend this practice. What a great experience.
First time in and we would highly recommend. They went above and beyond to ensure our satisfaction and and that our experience was positive!
This is the best office ever! I have been taking my son here through his teen years. They have always been so efficient and accommodating.
Trust me my son has gone through a lot of glasses with losing them,, breaking them, and the dog chewing them! He has gone for visits with me driving the car, taking his bike, and finally going to his appointments alone driving his own car.

Eye exams are a series of vision tests performed by optometrists to evaluate your vision and eye health. These tests are an important part of staying healthy. Here are some of the different eye tests that are part of our eye exam.

Covering one eye at a time, you’ll be asked to read letters from a chart positioned at a specific distance. This is likely what you think of when you picture an eye exam. Your optometrist will analyze your responses to determine how your vision in each eye measures up against the standard 20/20 vision.

This test measures the shape and curve of the outside of the eye, known as the cornea. The shape of the cornea affects how light enters the eye and is focused. Some people have corneas with steep or elongated curves, which can result in a condition known as astigmatism.
Optometrists use keratometry tests to detect astigmatism.

An intraocular pressure test measures the force or pressure created by the fluid in your eyes. An abnormal level of eye pressure can be a warning sign of glaucoma.

When you imagine an eye appointment, do you picture yourself looking into a thick instrument with numerous lenses and dials? That machine is called a phoropter, and your optometrist uses it to conduct a retinoscopy. A retinoscopy allows the optometrist to approximate your optimal lens prescription.

Along with a retinoscopy, a refraction test determines your eyeglass prescription. You gaze into the phoropter and look at the eye chart on the opposite wall. The optometrist repeatedly asks you which of two lens options lets you see more clearly, and determines whether your eyes are nearsighted, farsighted, or affected by astigmatism.

A slit lamp is a microscope with a bright, thin beam of light. You rest your chin and forehead on the frame while the optometrist examines the front structures of your eyes, including the eyelids, cornea, iris and lens. It helps detect dry eye, cataracts, scratches and infections.

When recommended, eye drops widen your pupils so the optometrist can see more of the inside of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve. This allows a more detailed examination for conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Your vision may stay blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours.
The exact tests and their order depend on your eyes and your needs. Dr. Russell will explain each step as you go.
