Vision insurance can feel like a maze, especially when you are balancing retirement, health care needs and a careful budget in The Villages. This guide explains what Medicare, VSP and other plans usually pay for.

It also shares tips to get the best value from your vision insurance.

What Is Vision Insurance?

Vision insurance is a plan that helps pay for routine eye care. Unlike regular health insurance, it focuses only on your eyes. A vision plan often gives partial coverage or discounts for:

  • Eye exams

  • Prescription eyeglasses, including frames and lenses

  • Contact lenses and supplies

  • Lens upgrades, like anti-glare coatings or progressive lenses

Medicare and Vision Insurance

Many Villages residents rely on Medicare or Medicare Advantage, so start by learning how these fit with vision insurance.

If you are 65 or older, you probably have Medicare. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) offers little vision coverage, and it does not cover routine eye exams, eyeglasses, or contact lenses.

Medicare Part B may cover some medical eye care, such as:

  • Eye exams related to certain conditions, like diabetes

  • Tests and treatments for conditions such as macular degeneration or cataracts

For broader coverage, like yearly eye checkups or glasses, you may need a Medicare Advantage plan that includes vision benefits. Another option is to add a stand-alone vision plan, such as VSP. Please check your own plan details, because coverage differs.

Private Vision Insurance Plans

VSP is one of the best-known private plans.

VSP (Vision Service Plan) is one of the largest vision insurers in the country. Its plans typically cover:

  • Yearly eye exams, often with a small copay

  • Prescription glasses and lenses, with an allowance for frames

  • Contact lenses, up to a set dollar amount

Perks may include discounts on premium lenses. AARP members can read about AARP member discounts for VSP.

Plans vary, so please call us at (352) 399-5412 to ask which plans we accept and what your benefits may cover. You can also browse our eyeglasses while you plan.

Tips for Getting the Most From Your Benefits

  1. Get regular eye exams. They update your prescription and find problems like glaucoma, which is more common with age. Even if your vision feels fine, a yearly checkup can catch problems early.

If your Medicare Advantage plan includes eye exams, use them. Read the AAO’s advice on keeping 20/20 vision, and see our complete eye exam page.

  2. Know what is covered first. Some plans cover only in-network providers. Others may pay part of the cost for out-of-network care.

    Check before you book.

  3. Look at Medicare Advantage. Some Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans include strong vision benefits. Compare plans each year to see which fits your needs.

  4. Use clear resources. The Healthcare.gov glossary on vision coverage explains key terms.
